2 Diet Sodas a Day Increase Risk of Heart Disease or Stroke by 50%
Researchers from the World Health organization conducted one of the longest studies of soda and diet soda consumption. The results were published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers found men and women who drank two or more glasses a day of sugar-sweetened soft drinks had a higher risk of dying from digestive disorders, while those who drank the same amount of diet drinks had higher risks of dying from cardiovascular disease. They studied over 450,000 people in 10 European countries for 19 years. There seemed to be a dose effect meaning the more a person drank, the greater the risk. This is just the latest study in a long list of recent ones that show how bad both regular and diet soda is for health. This study did not find an increase in cancer but a recent study published in the BMJ in July did. Back in March, a study published in the journal Circulation found that women who drank more than two servings a day of sugary beverages had a 63% increased risk of premature death compared to women who drank them less than once a month. Men who did the same had a 29% increase in risk. Moral of the story, getting rid of soda, regular or diet can only improve your health.
