Pregnancy and Lower back Pain.
Lower back pain is probably the main complaint that our pregnant patients complain of. There are a few reasons for this. First the obvious one is the weight gain. The increase in belly size causes the woman to have to shift her upper body backwards to compensate. This new posture will put increased stress on the lower back especially towards the end of the pregnancy when the weight gain is the most. Another reason is that during pregnancy your body releases a hormone called Relaxin which relaxes the ligaments in the pelvis to get ready for birth. When they relax, it can make the spine and pelvis more prone to spinal misalignment (Subluxation) which can also cause pain. Another cause is altered bio-mechanics. You see, as mom’s posture start to change because of the developing baby, she changes the way that she performs everyday tasks. Many times this change in mechanics can cause additional strain not only on the lower back, but on any region of the spine. Over time this can add up.
So what can be done?
This is where chiropractic care comes in. Chiropractors perform gentle adjustments to moms to be to help realign the spine and relieve the muscular and nerve tension. Our patients who have gone through pregnancies with and without chiropractic care tell us that the pregnancies with chiropractic were much easier and with much less pain. They even report an easier birth.
