Breast Cancer Risk From Hormone Therapy is Greater Than Once Thought
The risk of breast cancer with treating menopause with hormone replacement therapy isn’t new. But a major study published in the Lancet found that the risk is twice as great as once thought. That risk continues for 10 years after therapy has stopped. In an interview in the Financial Times, medical statistician Richard Peto stated that the risk of breast cancer from hormone replacement therapy has been “widely misrepresented” as being lower than it really is. “We really are concerned that many GPs have been saying it is not something you really have to worry about,” said Prof Valerie Beral from the University of Oxford, a co-author of the study. Women who have been taking the therapy are urged talk to their doctors at their next visit and make sure they get the proper screenings.
