Diet Coke more likely to make you gain weight
The study which is published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports, found that ingesting artificial sweeteners can cause an individual to actually gain weight. They looked at over 5000 adults and found that those who consumed large amounts gained more weight than non-users.
Prof Clifton said: “Consumers of artificial sweeteners do not reduce their overall intake of sugar.
“They use both sugar and low-calorie sweeteners and may psychologically feel they can indulge in their favorite foods.
“Artificial sweeteners can also change the gut bacteria which may lead to weight gain and risk of type 2 diabetes”.
Scientists at Mass General have found that when aspartame is broken down, the end product disrupts the metabolic rate.
