Dog heart problems linked to grain-free food
Recently there has been an increase in the number of dogs being diagnosed with a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The condition has also been happening in cats but to a lesser extent. The Culprit appears to be grain free pet food. The Food and Drug Administration announced a possible link between the condition, which can cause heart failure, and grain-free pet foods. Pet food companies who make these products by replacing the grains with ingredients like peas, lentils or potatoes. By April this past year, the FDA said that it had received 524 reports of 560 dogs and 14 cats diagnosed with DCM that appeared to be related to diet.
