Exercise before Breakfast and Burn Double the Fat

A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that those who exercised on an empty stomach lost twice as much fat as those who didn’t.   After fasting during sleep, insulin levels are low in the morning.  This allows the body to tap fat stores for energy instead of carbohydrates.   The study was done on 30 overweight men in the United Kingdom.  The participants who exercised before eating also had an increased ability to respond to insulin throughout the day. “This work suggests that performing exercise in the overnight-fasted state can increase the health benefits of exercise for individuals, without changing the intensity, duration or perception of their effort,” said Dr. Gareth Wallis.  He also noted that new research needed to be done to see if women respond the same as men.
