Knee Pain: Why It Happens (And What You Can Do About It)

Knee pain can be incredibly debilitating 😣.

It can stop you from doing simple daily tasks. It can make it harder to care for your family. And it can definitely keep you from training or exercising the way you want to.

I’ve had my share of knee pain. I first experienced it as a teenage soccer player ⚽. More recently, I dealt with it again while doing CrossFit. So I understand how frustrating it can be.

Knee Pain Is Usually a Symptom

Here’s something important to understand:

Knee pain is usually a symptom — not the root problem.

The knee is primarily a hinge joint. It bends and straightens. It doesn’t have a lot of rotation compared to the hip or ankle.

If you experience a direct trauma — like a hit to the knee that causes an ACL tear — then the knee itself is clearly injured.

But if you have knee pain and there was no trauma, the problem often starts somewhere else.

Common areas that contribute to knee pain include:

  • The hip

  • The lumbar spine

  • The pelvis

  • The foot and ankle

Why Other Joints Matter

For the knee to work properly, it depends on good movement in the joints above and below it.

The hip and foot are more complex than the knee. They move in multiple directions. If they lose mobility or stability, the knee has to compensate.

Over time, that compensation creates repetitive stress 🔁.

The lumbar spine and pelvis also need proper alignment and motion. If they’re not functioning well, the knee absorbs extra strain.

What Happens Over Time?

When these mechanics aren’t working properly, wear and tear can show up as:

  • Meniscus tears

  • Cartilage damage

  • Osteoarthritis

Some common diagnoses related to poor biomechanics include:

  • IT band pain

  • Chondromalacia

  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome

  • Medial knee pain

  • Patellar tendinitis

The Forward Knee Problem

When the hip or ankle loses mobility, the knee often shifts forward more than it should during movements like squatting or kneeling.

That forward shift increases pressure on the knee joint ⚠️.

It also increases force on the cartilage, meniscus, and surrounding soft tissues. Over time, that extra load leads to irritation and breakdown.

Our Approach to Non-Traumatic Knee Pain

When there’s no trauma involved, we focus on restoring proper mechanics.

That means making sure:

  • The hip is moving well

  • The ankle is mobile

  • The pelvis and spine are aligned

  • The knee itself is functioning properly

We use a combination of:

  • Soft tissue work

  • Extremity adjustments

  • Spinal adjustments

We also provide specific home care exercises 🏠 to reinforce the corrections and keep you progressing.
