Low Back Disc Herniation Gets Better Without Surgery
A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine discusses a case of a woman with lower back pain, leg pain and leg numbness. An initial MRI showed a lumbar disc herniation. Instead of surgery she chose conservative treatment. Her symptoms went away and a second MRI 5 months later showed it had resolved.
The authors also noted: ” Data from clinical trials suggest that patients who have herniated lumbar disks have similar long-term outcomes whether they undergo surgery or elect conservative management. In addition, the risk of subsequent catastrophic worsening without surgery is minimal.”
