Low Fat Diet Linked to Low Testosterone in Men

A new study, published in the Journal Urology, has found that men who ate a lower fat diet had a small but significantly lower levels of testosterone.  Over 3000 men ages 18-80 were included in the study.  “We found that men who adhered to a fat restrictive diet had lower serum testosterone than men on a nonrestrictive diet,” according to the report by Jake Fantus, MD.  Of the 3000 plus men, about 15% of them were following a low fat diet as defined by the American Heart Association.

The researchers then wanted to account for other possible factors that could lower testosterone such as exercise habits, BMI, age and past medical history.  Even with these factors accounted for, the men on the lower fat diet still had lower testosterone.  Although the researchers have stated more studies are needed, men who are not overweight and have low testosterone may want to avoid a low fat diet.
