Only Half of US Children get Enough Sleep on School Nights
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, only 48% of school children are getting the recommended 9 hours of sleep a night. “Chronic sleep loss is a serious public health problem among children,” said abstract author Hoi See Tsao, MD, FAAP. “Insufficient sleep among adolescent, for example, is associated with physical and mental health consequences including increased risk of depression and obesity and negative effects on mood, attention and academic performance.” She also stated that the best way to help children get enough sleep is to focus on decreasing screen time, establishing bedtime routines and the length of the school day and school start times.
