Rotator Cuff Pain Symptoms
Rotator cuff pain can significantly affect your ability to perform everyday activities and enjoy an active lifestyle. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that help stabilize the shoulder and allow you to lift, reach, throw, push, pull, and carry objects. When these tissues become irritated, inflamed, strained, or injured, even simple movements can become painful.
Symptoms vary depending on the severity and type of rotator cuff injury. Some people experience a gradual onset of pain that worsens over time, while others develop symptoms suddenly following an injury, fall, lifting incident, or repetitive overhead activity. Rotator cuff pain often restricts mobility and can make many daily activities difficult or impossible.
Depending on your condition, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
• Dull, aching rotator cuff pain that worsens with activity
• Sharp pain when reaching overhead, lifting objects, or extending your arm away from your body
• Pain when putting on a shirt, jacket, or coat
• Difficulty reaching behind your back to fasten a seatbelt, tuck in a shirt, or reach into a back pocket
• Pain or weakness when lifting groceries, laundry baskets, children, or other objects
• Stiffness or reduced shoulder mobility
• Weakness in the shoulder, arm, or upper body
• Difficulty sleeping, especially when lying on the affected side
• Frequent waking during the night due to shoulder discomfort
• An audible clicking, popping, grinding, or catching sensation within the shoulder
• Pain or difficulty raising your arm above shoulder height
• Pain during sports such as golf, tennis, pickleball, baseball, swimming, volleyball, or weightlifting
• Tenderness when touching the shoulder or upper arm
• Pain that may radiate into the upper arm, neck, shoulder blade region, or occasionally toward the elbow
• A feeling that the shoulder is unstable, weak, or may “give out”
• Reduced strength and endurance during work, exercise, or recreational activities
• Difficulty performing overhead work such as painting, cleaning, stocking shelves, or home repairs
• Pain while driving, especially when steering or reaching for controls
• Swelling, bruising, or redness following an acute injury
• Decreased range of motion and loss of flexibility
• Muscle tightness around the neck, upper back, and shoulder due to compensation
Rotator cuff pain can affect nearly every aspect of daily life. Simple tasks such as brushing your hair, washing your back, reaching into a cabinet, carrying groceries, exercising, playing sports, or sleeping comfortably may become increasingly difficult. Left untreated, rotator cuff pain can lead to worsening weakness, decreased function, compensation patterns, and a significant decline in overall quality of life.
